'Star Wars' monster passes away at 74

'Star Wars' legend Peter Mayhew portraying Chewbacca in the film series has passed away.

"He put his heart and soul into the role of Chewbacca," his family said in a statement, adding, "But, to him, the 'Star Wars' family meant so much more to him than a role in a film."

According to his agent, the famed actor died with his family by his side in his North Texas home.

The icon, aged 74, played Chewbacca in the original 'Star Wars' trilogy before portraying the favorite role once more in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'.

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said about the man behind Chewbacca's mask that his portrayal of the character was an integral part contributing to the trilogy's success.

He is survived by his wife, Angie, and three children.
